Mayor Brandon Johnson unveils “The People’s Budget” for 2024 fiscal year

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson revealed the first budget proposal of his administration for the 2024 fiscal year on Wednesday, October 11. Addressing city staff, departments, community partners, labor and business leaders, as well as members of the Chicago City Council, the mayor introduced "The People's Budget", a critical measure for promoting citywide growth by targeting disinvested communities, fostering economic vitality, and providing safety and a sense of belonging for all residents.

Addressing the needs of disinvested communities is a core component of Mayor Johnson's budget plan. The proposed measures aim to uplift these communities by putting resources and opportunities back into areas where they have been historically lacking. TAccording to a statement from the city, this includes investments in affordable housing, economic development projects, and infrastructure improvements.

“I’m proud to present a budget that reflects both our challenges and our opportunities to begin the critical investments necessary to build a better, stronger, safer Chicago,” said Mayor Johnson in his statement, “This budget is the people's budget; we will ensure that every resident of this city can thrive in peace and prosperity, connected to all the amenities and resources they deserve"

A pillar of "The People's Budget" is fostering economic vitality citywide. According to a statement by the City of Chicago, Mayor Johnson believes that ensuring a robust and diverse economy is crucial to the success of Chicago and its residents. This will be achieved through supporting job creation and retention, attracting and retaining businesses, and prioritizing investments that generate positive social and environmental impacts.

The new budget seeks to ensure safety for all Chicagoans. It includes provisions for community-based policing, violence prevention programs, and support for first responders. Additionally, the plan aims to foster a culture of inclusivity and equity, emphasizing the importance of fair distribution of resources, and ensuring access to essential public services for all residents.

As the city prepares to embrace Mayor Johnson's "The People's Budget," the overall goal is to create a Chicago that is more equitable, prosperous, and inclusive. Moving forward, the budget aims to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the overall success of the city, with a strong emphasis on uplifting historically overlooked communities.
