Dear Candid Candace: My parents don’t know I am writing this, but I have been dating a college-age guy recently. Maybe what would bother them more is the fact that he is one of my coaches for our high school summer basketball clinic. I know that crosses some lines, but still, he is only four years older than me, and so far, we really get along well, and I really like the guy. I am a bit confused and looking for any advice. Best to keep it a secret for a while? Tell my parents before it goes further? Or end the relationship because of the coach/athlete conflict (even though he is really just a summer counselor and not an official coach)? Signed, Working On More Than My Jump Shot
Dear Working On More Than My Jump Shot: Navigating relationships can be both exciting and challenging, especially when there are potential conflicts like the one you mentioned. It's great that you're seeking advice and considering your options. Here are some suggestions to help you make the best decision for yourself even though my own instincts are screaming don’t do it. Number one is understanding the risk. Dating someone who is in a position of authority over you, even if it's just during a summer clinic, can raise concerns and may lead to complications. Think about the potential consequences if this relationship were to become public. AND consider the legal aspect! In some places, there may be laws or regulations regarding relationships between minors and adults that you should be aware of. There are a lot of risks involved here for what appears to be just a summer fling. Reflect on your feelings for this guy and whether the relationship is worth pursuing despite the odds. Also, assess parental concerns: Put yourself in your parents' shoes and try to understand their perspective. Consider how they might react to this news and what their primary concerns might be. And lastly, focus on your priorities. Remember that your education and personal growth should be your top priorities. Ensure that the relationship does not interfere with your studies or emotional well-being. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make, but it's crucial to think carefully about the potential consequences and to consider the perspectives of those who care about you. If you feel overwhelmed or uncertain, don't hesitate to seek support from trusted adults or professional counselors. Stay true to yourself and make choices that prioritize your well-being and future. Good luck!
Dear Candid Candace: Simple question here but maybe you have some thoughts. I love hearing about products that are really effective and a great buy. Two that I have used for years, that are quite common but still worth mentioning because they’re so good, would be Shout and Swiffer. I love Shout as I am prone to food stains on my shirt and, as advertised, that stuff “Shouts it Out” every time—no matter how bad the stain. And The Swiffer? Brilliantly designed, almost makes dusting a pleasure. Almost. So, the question is this: Does Ask Candid Candace have any simple but really effective products you would recommend? Would love to know about a few. Signed, Swiffing, Shouting, and Searching

Dear Swiffing, Shouting, and Searching: Absolutely! I'm glad to share some simple but highly effective products I use that you might find useful too. Many of these are well known and commonplace but you asked, so I’m answering! Here are a few of my recommendations that we love:
- Magic Eraser: This cleaning tool from Mr. Clean works wonders on various surfaces. It was a cleaning lady who touted me on it. It can remove stubborn stains, scuff marks, and grime with just a little water and a gentle scrub. It's perfect for walls, countertops, and even sneakers!
- OxiClean Stain Remover: I love this product. Similar to Shout, OxiClean is another powerful stain remover that works wonders on various fabrics, carpets, and surfaces. It's particularly effective against tough stains like red wine and coffee.
- Microfiber Cleaning Cloths: These soft and versatile cloths are great for dusting, cleaning surfaces, and even wiping off electronics screens. They are highly effective at trapping dust and dirt without the need for harsh chemicals. (My husband Chuck loves them! LOL!)
- Portuguese Sea Salt: This is simply the best damn salt I’ve ever found. It’s not easy to locate so good luck. It’s “saltier” than salt!
- Cast Iron Skillet: This is not exactly a “new gadget," but I couldn’t live without my cast iron skillet. I use it for everything from steaks to pancakes. It retains heat evenly and is perfect for both stovetop and oven cooking.
- Amazon Basics Velvet Hangers: These hangers are slim, durable, and covered in velvet to prevent clothes from slipping off. They are great for organizing your closet and keeping your clothes wrinkle-free and they don’t take up any room.
- Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer: I don’t own this one yet but it’s on my list. I’ve heard great things about this versatile kitchen appliance that combines an air fryer, toaster oven, and dehydrator in one. It's perfect for those who want to enjoy healthier fried foods without using a lot of oil.
- OXO Good Grips Microfiber Hand Duster: If you enjoy the convenience of Swiffer, you'll love this OXO duster. It efficiently traps dust and particles, making dusting less of a chore. Its microfiber material ensures a thorough clean.
I hope you find these product recommendations helpful! I know they have been for us! (Send questions to [email protected])
