Habemus papam! We have a new Pope! In the heart of Rome, beneath the shadow of St. Peter's Basilica, a new chapter in the history of the Catholic Church has unfolded. The conclave has spoken and Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a native of Chicago, was chosen as the 267th pope. He is the first American pope in history. He will take the name Pope Leo XIV.

During the last conclave, Pope Francis was elected in the afternoon voting portion of the second day, the same block of time for the conclave as this one which ended sooner than some experts had expected.
The new pope will lead 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.
