Green City Market (GCM) announced today, March 21, that it will reopen its flagship sustainable farmers’ market for the 24th season in Lincoln Park on Saturday, April 1, 2023, following a winter season at an indoor location in Avondale. The nonprofit’s West Loop location will reopen on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
This season, GCM will welcome four new vendors to its community, including Kajers Greens, offering greens, root veggies, chicken, and pork, Windy City Mushroom, offering gourmet mushrooms, Flock & Forage, offering charcuterie cones and boxes made fresh daily with ingredients from the market, and Treats de cuisine, offering sustainably-produced dog and cat treats. Additionally, over 50 vendors will return from previous seasons, including fan favorites like Ellis Family Farms, Jacobson Family Farms, and pHlour Bakery.
With food prices, notably eggs, rising substantially in grocery stores over the past year, shopping locally is a great way for consumers to get more for their money.
“The expensive eggs we’re now seeing in the grocery store are often months old. They’re less fresh, less nutritious, and less delicious!” Green City Market Executive Director, Mandy Moody stated. “By contrast, the fresh eggs that you’ll buy from the local family farms who sell at Green City Market are gathered just before the market. Beyond a more delicious, nutritious egg, when you buy from a local farmer, you’re supporting the local economy and a sustainable food system. It’s a win, win, win!”
GCM will continue to match Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits 2:1 up to $25 per market through its GCM For All program. Folks who spend $25 dollars of their SNAP benefits at GCM will automatically receive an additional $50 to triple their purchasing power of local, sustainable food.
There will be community programs for all ages, including culinary demos, a weekly at-market youth-program (Club Sprouts), and field trips for students in the Chicagoland area. Priority parking will be available for chefs shopping with our farmers through GCM’s Culinary Connections program.
GCM Lincoln Park will be open Saturdays from 7 a.m . - 1 p.m beginning April 1. Wednesday markets will be added to GCM Lincoln Park’s schedule beginning on May 3. GCM West Loop will return to Mary Bartelme Park on Saturdays from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. beginning on May 6. The outdoor season will run through November 18.
