Have you ever dreamed of exploring the cosmos? Chicagoans will now have the chance to uncover the secrets of the universe with “The Black Hole Experience”, an otherworldly immersive exhibition coming to the lakefront this month for a limited time.
Produced by the non-profit environmental organization Age of Union Alliance, the Black Hole Experience (BHX) is the brainchild of multidisciplinary artist Kelly Nunes and Age of Union Alliance CEO Dax Dasilva.
BHX is an interactive installation that will take viewers on a virtual journey through the universe. The installation is housed in a 1000 sq. ft., 53’ mobile space, containing an LED tunnel leading to a projection chamber where attendees will be surrounded by immersive views of celestial bodies and black holes.
The exhibition seeks to tap into recent cultural interest in space, spurred by the introduction of new forms of space travel and recent celestial events like the 2024 solar eclipse. Described as a “meditative experience”, BHX aims to foster an appreciation for the natural world and wonder about the fabric of reality.
The exhibition has been making the rounds throughout festivals in North America, with the upcoming Chicago premiere marking its first edition in the United States.
"The Black Hole Experience is more than just an exhibition," shares producer Dasilva, "Through this immersive journey, we aim to remind [viewers] of their intrinsic connection to the Earth and their role in protecting it. We are excited to bring the BHX to Chicago as our first American stop and engage the community with this powerful experience."
The Black Hole Experience will debut at North Avenue Beach from Friday, July 19 to Sunday, July 21. Hours are as follows:
July 19: 12 – 8 p.m.
July 20: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.
July 21: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
The one-of-a-kind art exhibition in Chicago is free and open to the public.
