Tenor David Portillo will perform as Septimius in Music of the Baroque's production of Handel's Theodora.

Music of the Baroque is set to present a powerful rendition of George Frideric Handel’s Theodora on March 2 and 3. Under the direction of Principal Guest Conductor Nicholas Kraemer—who will celebrate his 80th birthday with this production—the ensemble will bring Handel’s dramatic oratorio to life at two premier venues in the Chicago area.

Originally composed in 1750, Theodora tells the moving story of a Christian martyr and her Roman protector, Didymus, set against the backdrop of religious persecution in ancient Antioch. Though not widely embraced in Handel’s time, the oratorio has since become a treasured work, admired for its profound beauty and emotional depth.

The stellar cast includes:

  • Sherezade Panthaki (soprano) as Theodora
  • Iestyn Davies (countertenor) as Didymus
  • Allyson McHardy (mezzo-soprano) as Irene
  • David Portillo (tenor) as Septimius
  • Jonathan Woody (bass-baritone) as Valens

With Music of the Baroque’s exceptional chorus and orchestra, this performance promises to be a highlight of the season.

Performance Schedule

  • Sunday, March 2 – 7:30 PM
North Shore Center for the Performing Arts (9501 Skokie Blvd, Skokie)
  • Monday, March 3 – 7:30 PM
Harris Theater for Music and Dance (205 E. Randolph St., Chicago)

For those unable to attend in person, a digital on-demand streaming option will be available from March 7 to April 7.

Tickets and more information are available at Music of the Baroque’s official website. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience one of Handel’s most profound and moving works.
