The Chicago Opera Theater turned suspense, music and mystery into one unforgettable night with its Murder Mystery Gala.
This year’s theme, Murder at the Opera, transformed the evening into a fully immersive theatrical experience that invited guests to step inside the story instead of simply watching from the sidelines. Before the event even began, attendees received a mock “Concert Review” that later appeared in the program book - a cleverly crafted piece that ultimately sparked the fictional murder at the heart of the evening.

From the moment guests arrived, they were greeted by a staged crime scene and a trail of intriguing clues. A detailed forensics report, physical evidence tied to famous operatic deaths and written materials hinting at motives set the tone for a night of sleuthing and suspense.

The suspects soon emerged: five singers portraying characters inspired by legendary operatic murderers. Rather than giving traditional introductions, each suspect revealed their personality and possible guilt through live aria performances, blending dramatic storytelling with powerful music and giving guests deeper insight into the case.
Throughout the night, attendees were encouraged to play detective -- studying the clues, weighing the performances and casting their vote for who killed the evening’s unfortunate victim, the venomous critic Basil Snide.
In the end, the culprit was revealed as Quinn Millecento (aka Quinn Middleman), whose method paid homage to the poisoned flowers in the opera Adriana Lecouvreur. The twist rewarded guests who paid close attention to the subtle clues woven throughout the experience.
The unique evening proved both entertaining and impactful, raising more than $170,000.
