Boricua Pride

A large metal Puerto Rican flag towers over Division St. at the Paseo Boricua (“Puerto Rican Promenade") in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The Navy Pier Neighborhood Artisan Market will showcase the people and talent of Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood from Friday August 7 through Sunday August 9, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Besides featuring a selection of items for sale created by members of the Humboldt Park community, the market will offer shoppers an opportunity to meet the artists and learn about the neighborhood. The event is being curated by the Puerto Rican Cultural Center. It will be located on the South Dock between Harry Caray’s and the Shorelines boats.

About Humboldt Park

Situated on Chicago’s northwest side, Humboldt Park "has one of the largest concentrations of Puerto Ricans in the Chicago area," according to the Pier’s website. "Additionally, over the years the area experienced a large influx of Eastern European Jews … as well as large numbers of Poles, Ukrainians and Italians ... and a sizable influence of Mexicans."

The neighborhood and its surroundings also figure prominently in the writings of Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, and Sandra Cisneros.

Planned in conjunction with DCASE, local neighborhood business groups, and the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, the Artisan Market is a weekly event that runs through September 6. According to Navy Pier, it is also one of the reasons why "shopping in Chicago is more dynamic and delightful at Navy Pier than anywhere else in the city."
