Oak Street debuts its own light show tonight, November 26, with Lighting Up Oak Street! More than 100,000 white lights on the 40+ trees and light poles on Oak Street between Michigan Avenue and Rush Street will blink, fade and shimmer in concert with the ambient, festive holiday music on the street beginning tonight through Saturday, January 8. The amazing spectacle will welcome visitors back to dine at some of the city’s most popular restaurants; shop some of the world’s fine jewelry, couture clothing, and sought-after fashion houses; and enjoy the extraordinary experience of Oak Street.
“After the pandemic impacted the world-class, luxury shopping experience of Oak Street, we want everyone to know that Oak Street is back,” notes Joe Lombardo, Vice Chair of the Oak St SSA Commission and Boutique Manager of Richard Mille. “What better way to welcome back shoppers looking for that incomparable gift and making special memories than to have this spectacular illuminated display.”
Visitors to one of Chicago’s most historic districts will hear an inviting, festive soundtrack while walking through the street and be charmed by the dancing lights. The experience is created by Illuminight Lighting, which has designed and installed Lincoln Park Zoo’s ZooLights for more than a decade. The music is a rotating medley of mainly instrumental holiday classics. Using the latest in holiday light technology, the light show will be programmed to coordinate with the music.
“While many shopping districts have holiday lights, we wanted to deliver a more unique, wondrous and show-stopping experience on Oak St. for our visitors and residents,” said Gina Caruso, Oak Street SSA program manager with the Oak Street Council. “We were inspired by the light shows seen around the world, from Italian palazzi to the Bellagio in Las Vegas. And it’s just plain fun!”
Throughout the holiday shopping season, other activities will greet visitors and residents, including special street vendors on Saturday December 11, including Stan’s Donut food truck, Fido to Go (for furry friends), and carolers. Singers from local schools, including Parker Elementary School, will also perform along the street and in stores.
The Oak Street District is located in the heart of the downtown area, just steps away from Michigan Avenue. Oak Street District is a premier destination for exceptional boutique shopping at the world’s most sought-after fashion houses, luxury accommodations, superb fine dining, and exquisite high-end salon and spa experiences, curated into the finest luxury Chicago experience for you to enjoy.
