For millions of families across Mexico and America, November is a time of celebration and remembrance as they prepare for one of the highlight holidays of Latino culture, Dia de los Muertos. This year’s celebration took place on Saturday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 2, but the festivities carry on as the Pilsen neighborhood in Chicago honors the holiday all month long with their first-ever “Dia de los Muertos Window Walk.”
Taking place from Saturday, Nov. 1, through Saturday, Nov. 29, along Pilsen’s 18th Street between Damon and Morgan, the window walk features twenty-six participating businesses that have activated their storefronts by displaying holiday-themed, handmade creations from over one hundred local elementary and high school students in the area.
The exhibition—put on by the Pilsen-based non-profit Pilsen Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Benito Juarez Community Academy and youth art collective Pilarte—is the first of its kind and aims to promote cultural heritage and young artistry in the community.

In a statement, the organizers also noted that the artistic showcase comes at a time when neighborhood streets have gone quiet in the wake of recent ICE raids, and hopes that the event will spur additional energy and commerce for struggling downtown Pilsen businesses impacted by the political climate.
Visitors who view the installations by Friday, Nov. 28, will have the chance to cast a vote for their favorite design that encapsulates the spirit of the holiday using a QR code available at each storefront, with the winner being announced at the end of the month.
