This spring, the Art Institute of Chicago unveils the breathtaking, monumental Hartwell Memorial Window, a crowning achievement in the medium of stained glass.
Designed by Agnes F. Northop of Tiffany Studios, the leaded glass window stands 23' tall and 16' wide and was created as a commission from Mary Hartwell in honor of her husband, Frederick Hartwell, for the Central Baptist Church of Providence, Rhode Island (now Community Church of Providence).
The historic artwork, comprised of 48 different panels, remained housed in the sanctuary of the church until 2018, when the congregation decided to relocate the window to the Art Institute of Chicago, where it can be conserved to ensure it's long-term stability and remain on public view.
The window depicts a distant view of Mount Chocorua, one of the most beloved peaks of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. It's inscribed: My help / cometh from / the Lord who / made heaven / and earth (And signed lower right, Tiffany Studios / New York 1917)
The exhibit will be unveiled on May 29. Details here: https://bit.ly/2Qpm5fP
