Beach season is back in Chicago beginning this Friday, May 24, just in time for Memorial Day Weekend! Chicagoans can break out the beach blankets and head to their favorite local beaches for a full day of swimming and fun in the sun.
According to the Chicago Park District, city beaches are open from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. each day of the season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission to all Chicago beaches is free. During the season, Lifeguards will be on duty to ensure the safety of all beachgoers during regular hours.
The Chicago Park District enforces a colored flag system to ensure the safety of swimmers. Green flags posted in the water mean it is safe to swim, yellow flags mean swim with caution, and red flags mean swimming is not permitted.
During the open season, the Chicago Park District collects water samples daily to test for potentially harmful bacteria and maintain public safety. Those interested in learning more about water safety can sign up for one of the Park District’s free water safety events.
