Meta and Salesforce to sublease downtown office spaces

Major tech companies Meta and Salesforce have announced plans to sublease large portions of office space in downtown Chicago.

Salesforce representatives have stated the company will be subleasing approximately 125,000 square feet of office space along the Chicago River. This number represents nearly a quarter of the space Salesforce planned to occupy in 2021. At the beginning of 2023, Salesforce confirmed they would let go 10% of their workforce, more than 8,000 people.

Meta will be subleasing five floors of space at 151 N. Franklin Street, in the northwest corner of the Loop. The company, which began leasing the office in 2018, and will reduce its share of the space by nearly half. In the fall of last year, Meta announced more than 10,000 layoffs, followed by additional layoffs in early March 2023.

Reluctancy to expand office space has been a trend among companies in Chicago since the pandemic, as the introduction of remote work has prompted businesses to reassess the role of the physical office. Despite these cutbacks, Meta and Salesforce are expected to maintain a presence in Chicago. “We remain committed to Chicago and look forward to years of innovation ahead”, said one Meta representative.
