Our first taste of the 3-month-old Ambar Chicago, which has quickly become one of River North’s standout new spots, was memorable, delicious and infinitely fulfilling thanks to its  “Dining Without Limits” approach to Balkan cuisine. Instead of sticking to just one or two entrées, guests pay a flat fee and enjoy as many small plates as they like, with the option to keep sampling until they’re ready to stop or pop.

The menu covers more than 40 dishes at both lunch and dinner. Lunch is priced at about $27.99, while dinner is $56.99, and both offer a wide mix of flavors. Diners can dig into cheese and meat pies, sujuk flatbread, roasted lamb, mussels cooked in white wine, goulash, rainbow trout, beet tzatziki and more. Brunch follows the same format, with sweet and savory additions like pastries and egg dishes. It’s a setup that makes sharing fun and gives everyone the chance to try something new. Luckily, we were with an adventuresome  crowd so the samplings were frequent and fabulous.

The atmosphere is just as appealing as the food. The restaurant combines modern design with a comfortable, inviting vibe and service is quick enough to keep the steady flow of plates from ever feeling overwhelming. Low lighting and warm colors made the space cozy and inviting while waiters were anxious to please. When the weather cooperates, guests can also enjoy a beautiful patio dining experience.

Chicago’s large Balkan community gives Ambar added authenticity, but the restaurant is designed to welcome anyone, whether they grew up with these dishes or are tasting them for the first time. The mix of hearty stews, grilled meats, fresh salads and baked specialties makes it approachable while still offering plenty of discovery.

And just when the meal seems complete, there’s one last detail: each guest is offered a small glass of rakia, a traditional Balkan fruit brandy. It’s a smooth way to close out the feast that’s high in alcohol content and a great way to celebrate the end to a perfect night.
