The roar of fighter jets will once again echo across Lake Michigan as the Chicago Air and Water Show returns on Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, with a full rehearsal day on Friday, August 14. As one of the city's most beloved summer traditions and the largest free admission air and water show in the country, the event draws more than a million spectators to the lakefront each year.

The biggest change for 2026 is the return of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, who will headline the show with their thrilling aerial demonstrations. Flying six F-16 Fighting Falcons, the elite squadron is known for precision flying, daring formations and high-speed maneuvers that leave audiences looking skyward in amazement. The Thunderbirds take the spotlight this year in place of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, whose national tour schedule prevents them from appearing in Chicago.
Fans will also see a variety of military and civilian performers throughout the weekend. Returning favorites include the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team and the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs, along with additional aircraft demonstrations that showcase the skill and precision of America's armed forces and some of the country's top civilian aviators. As always, the final performance schedule will depend on weather and operational conditions.

North Avenue Beach remains the center of the action, but spectators can enjoy excellent views from many points along the lakefront, including Oak Street Beach, Fullerton Beach, Navy Pier and nearby parks. For those hoping to avoid the largest crowds, Friday's rehearsal offers an excellent opportunity to catch many of the same performances before the official weekend begins.
The show typically runs from late morning through mid-afternoon each day, filling Chicago's skyline with breathtaking aerial displays while Lake Michigan provides a stunning natural backdrop. Whether it's your first visit or an annual tradition, the Chicago Air and Water Show continues to be one of the city's signature summer events, celebrating aviation, military excellence and the beauty of Chicago's lakefront.
