The Chicago Botanic Garden received the largest single gift in its history—$21 million from The Negaunee Foundation to advance plant conservation science and restoration. This gift is among the largest of its kind to a botanic garden in the United States.

With this support, Botanic Garden scientists will be able to curate and continue building world-class seed and pollen banks, help prevent the loss of genetic diversity in botanic garden collections, and train new conservation scientists.

The nonprofit Negaunee Foundation, based in Northbrook, is known for its philanthropic support of important work at Chicago-area cultural institutions, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Field Museum, and Ravinia.

The Negaunee Institute for Plant Conservation Science and Action is located on the Garden’s Glencoe campus, and all are invited to see science in action. The Institute works on some of the most critical issues of our time—saving plants from extinction and protecting the natural habitats that sustain our world. [Source: Chicago Botanic Garden]
