Goodman Theatre is launching its 100 Free Acts of Theater during its 100th anniversary, presenting a year‑long, city‑wide celebration featuring free performances across all 50 Chicago wards. Produced in conjunction with the Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events (DCASE) and supported by Allstate, this unprecedented public arts initiative celebrates civic engagement and equitable access.
The series begins late July 2025 with BOOK UP!, a magical outdoor storytelling and circus experience aimed at children 0–5. Co‑directed by Tor Campbell and Raquel Torre, and starring Jean Claudio, the show travels to 12 local parks from July 23 through August 10, each performance capped with an interactive workshop.
At a press conference, Walter Artistic Director Susan V. Booth described the series as “a way to say thank you” to the city, acknowledging Chicago’s role in sustaining 100 seasons of artistry. DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth added that the program “brings theater to every corner of our neighborhoods and makes the arts accessible to all,” amplifying Chicago’s mission of cultural inclusivity.
Leadership on the ground comes from Jared Bellot, Goodman’s Clifford Director of Education & Engagement, alongside Emi Suarez and Ericka Ratcliffe, who coordinate with community partners like Lookingglass Theatre, Perceptions Theatre, Honey Pot Performance and others to deliver culturally relevant programming with paid artists.
This initiative runs alongside Goodman’s mainstage centennial season, which features six world premieres, key revivals, and the immersive Theater of the Mind by David Byrne, reflecting a dual strategy of innovation and community outreach.
By distributing free performances across the city, Goodman Theatre isn’t just celebrating a milestone—it’s affirming its identity as Chicago’s civic theater, committed to equity, engagement, and creative excellence. More events, including Indigenous storytelling, BIPOC Play Festival, Living Newspaper, Mandala festival, and many others across arts, music, and workshops, are rolling out through summer 2026.
