Illinois users may benefit from Instagram class-action settlement.

According to the Chicago Tribune, millions of Instagram users in Illinois may have the opportunity to receive a portion of a new $68.5 million class-action settlement related to biometric privacy. The lawsuit claims that the facial recognition technology utilized on the app, until November 2021, violated Illinois' stringent biometric privacy law.

Court documents state that any individual who used Instagram while in Illinois between August 10, 2015, and August 16, 2023, will be eligible to receive a share of the settlement if it gains approval. For those interested, the deadline to submit claims is September 27, and detailed information can be found on the settlement website.

A final approval hearing for the Instagram class-action settlement is scheduled to take place in October.
