NASCAR has officially announced that it will head to San Diego in 2026, replacing the Chicago Street Race with a new street course at Naval Base Coronado, marking the first time the Cup Series will race on an active military installation. The event is scheduled for June 19–21, aligning with both Father’s Day weekend and the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary celebration.
The race will be only the second NASCAR street race ever held, following the debut in Chicago in 2023. The Coronado course, which is still under design, is expected to span approximately three miles, weaving through the historic Naval Air Station North Island. This event will represent the sport’s first visit to San Diego County and its return to Southern California following the closure of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana in 2023.

The decision to pause the Chicago event in 2026 comes as NASCAR evaluates long-term viability and works to address feedback from local officials and residents. Although the Chicago street race delivered unique visuals and memorable moments, the sport has clarified that it is not permanently abandoning the Windy City and may consider a return in 2027.
The San Diego announcement reinforces NASCAR’s broader strategy of innovating with non-traditional venues to reach new audiences. Like the Clash at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, the Coronado event reflects an effort to blend motorsports with spectacle and destination appeal. Hosting the race on a Navy base also aligns with NASCAR’s strong military connections and patriotic branding, particularly during a milestone year for the U.S. Navy.
Fans and commentators have expressed a mix of excitement and skepticism. Some see the San Diego race as a fresh opportunity for growth, while others voice concern over NASCAR's increasing reliance on street courses. Still, the organization remains committed to evolving the schedule while preserving its traditional roots on ovals and superspeedways.
As planning ramps up for the 2026 NASCAR Coronado race, expect a high-profile rollout with strong military presence, entertainment activations, and national attention. Meanwhile, the future of street racing in Chicago remains an open question, pending further developments and community engagement.
