Chicago has been named the best big city in the United States for the eighth consecutive year by Condé Nast Traveler in the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards. This year, over 575,000 readers participated in the survey to vote Chicago in the number one spot. The city’s ongoing excellence continues to surpass other formidable American destinations.
Condé Nast Traveler praises Chicago for its stunning architecture, world-class museums, innovative restaurants, and vibrant neighborhoods. These factors have contributed to its consistent top ranking in the Readers' Choice Awards. From the iconic sky-high Willis Tower to the extensive Art Institute, visitors are met with breathtaking sights and rich cultural experiences.
“Chicago’s historic eighth consecutive win of this award reflects the rich diversity of culture, culinary innovation, and experiences our city offers,” said Governor JB Pritzker in a press release by Choose Chicago. “The rest of the world is catching on to the fact that there’s truly no more dynamic destination in America than right here. Congratulations to the hard-working people of Chicago’s hotels, restaurants, venues, unions, and the entire tourism and hospitality industry who make this recognition possible!”
Chicago's culinary scene plays a significant role in its acclaim. The city hosts celebrity chefs and acclaimed restaurants, earning a reputation as a foodie’s paradise. The seventy-seven bustling neighborhoods, each with its unique charm, offer a variety of experiences from upscale dining to laid-back bars, catering to all kinds of travelers.

Chicago compared to other top cities on the list
In addition to Chicago, other cities like New York City, Miami, and New Orleans were highlighted in the Readers' Choice Awards. While these cities have their unique appeal, none have claimed the top spot as consistently as Chicago.
“Chicagoans know that our city is second to none,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson in a press release by Choose Chicago, “and now we have yet another incredible accolade to prove it. This honor is a testament to the strength, warmth, and resilience of Chicagoans and the beauty and vibrancy of our neighborhoods. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, there is always something to explore in Chicago.”
Miami's Art Deco architecture and lively nightlife scene draw in tourists, yet Chicago’s diverse appeal across various interests gives it an edge. Similarly, New York City's perpetual hustle makes it a significant travel hub, but Chicago’s balance between bustling downtown and serene neighborhoods sets it apart.
Moreover, cities like Washington, D.C. and New Orleans offer rich historical experiences and vibrant cultural scenes. However, Chicago’s blend of history, modernity, and its welcoming atmosphere continue to captivate visitors, ensuring they return time and time again.
“Being voted Best Big City in the U.S. for eight years in a row is no small feat,” said Choose Chicago Interim President and CEO Rich Gamble in a press release. “It’s a reflection of the passionate and tireless work of every Chicagoan who proudly shares our city with the world. Chicago continues to evolve as a global destination, and I’m excited for everything the future holds—major sporting events, neighborhood festivals, the next break-out restaurant. There is truly an endless variety of experiences to be had in Chicago.”
