On Friday, March 31, Adler Planetarium became the first planetarium in the United States to host legendary band Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” planetarium show. This marks the first time a band-approved version has been authorized to play.

Before its production, Pink Floyd reached out to the International Planetarium Society wanting to produce an official show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their “Dark Side of the Moon” album. Currently, between ten to fifteen planetariums have licensed it.

Senior Director of Theatres and Visualization Mike Smail commented on the gravity of the show’s release saying, “It’s a big deal Pink Floyd did this. My favorite part is the balance between trippy artistic visualizations and space scenes, particularly when it takes a great dive into one of Jupiter’s moons and the rings of Saturn.”

Audience members will experience several different vivid images and perspectives, some of which allow the viewer to feel like they’re both the astronaut themselves and also watching them as an outsider. The breathtaking images appear to be three-dimensional, engulfing viewers into the world while surrounded by iconic Pink Floyd music.

The entire 1973 album — all ten songs front to back — are featured in the planetarium show. “Dark Side of the Moon” is considered one of the best-selling albums in the world and ranks among the most critically acclaimed records in history. Since its release date, the album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

“The Dark Side of the Moon” planetarium show will run for an entire year in Adler’s Grainger Sky Theater at 3:15 p.m., Friday through Monday. Additionally, on Wednesdays, the show runs at 9:10 p.m. as part of Adler at Night.

Tickets are now on sale for $20 and can be purchased online. Adler Star Pass holders can access the show for no additional charge.
