The Polar Express Train Ride has officially returned to Union Station for the first time since the pandemic. Passengers get the chance to relive the magic of the Christmas movie classic on the one-hour trip to meet Santa.
On board, car hosts will work their way through the train, punching golden tickets before hot chocolate and Walkers Shortbread is brought out by dancing servers. Guests will then be able to read along with the famous children’s book, The Polar Express. As a part of the experience Santa and his helpers will greet all guests, giving the first gift of Christmas, a silver sleigh bell, to each person on board.
The Polar Express experience runs from Sunday, December 1 to Monday, January 1, 2024, and is powered by Rail Events Productions and co-sponsored by Amtrak and Walkers. The train follows a point-to-point route, going through tunnels, rail yards and neighborhoods along the Chicago River.
The experience is not a scenic sightseeing trip and is emphasized as immersive entertainment inside the train. Families are encouraged to wear pajamas just like the passengers from The Polar Express story and the 2004 Robert Zemeckis film. During the trip, characters will lead caroling and onboard entertainment, truly replicating an experience seen in the film.
A special “Sensory Friendly Train” will also run on Sunday, December 31 for families and children with sensory disabilities. The experience will be the same as the other performances with significant modifications such as softer audio levels, limited startling and jolting audio effects and no strobe or flashing lights. There will also be a designated quiet car for passengers who need a break from the performance.
Seating will be assigned on board and passengers can select seats during the online checkout process. Children under two may ride for free if seated on an adult’s lap, but will not receive hot chocolate or a treat. Boarding will take place at Chicago Union Station, with the check-in desk located at the Burlington Room in The Great Hall. Guests should arrive 40 minutes prior to boarding time.
