American Writers Museum to host “Get (Green) Lit” golf-themed event

On Tuesday, April 11, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the American Writers Museum will host a golf-themed “Get (Green) Lit” happy hour featuring a 9-hole mini golf course throughout the museum. The event is part of the museum’s ongoing monthly initiative — every second Tuesday — to engage community members and provide after-hours access to their exhibits.

Those who come out on Tuesday evening can simultaneously play a round and learn about famous literature and authors, with a focus on sportswriting. Visitors will have access to beer, wine, and a specialty cocktail called “The Sandtrap” — a boozy Arnold Palmer — with two complimentary drinks per ticket.

Social Media Coordinator for the museum Matthew Masino spoke on the event, saying, “The coolest thing about this ‘Get Lit’ initiative is the chance for literature and writing lovers to come together while playing mini golf in the museum and celebrate the writing within it.”

The Course Layout

The course itself is exciting and complex, boasting various writing-related obstacles, like classic typewriters. Some holes even provide opportunities to navigate more difficult dogleg lefts.

Each mini golf player is provided a scorecard, where every hole is named after the “masters” of writing. Some of those notable names include James Baldwin, Julia Child, Stan Lee, Maya Angelou, and Octavia Butler.

Whether playing a round or mingling, guests will have access to temporary and permanent exhibits, including the museum’s newest ‘Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice.’ This interactive and vivid exhibit allows patrons to scan a QR code for a fun surprise on their phone that brings each piece of artwork to life.

Special Guest and Book Signing

Tom Coyne, golf writer and New York Times bestselling author, will be on-site in the “clubhouse” signing copies of his book A Course Called America. Guests can also enter the raffle in this clubhouse area of the museum to win special prizes.

Additional Activities

For a more interactive experience, the museum has provided typewriters guests can use and take home any typed work. Instead of just one DJ, those in attendance are given control on their phone through Festify, where they can enter a code seen around the museum to add music to the playlist and vote on upcoming songs.
