Chicago’s Ducky Derby, a free annual fundraising event for Special Olympics Illinois, returned on Thursday, August 10. Over 90,000 rubber ducks splashed into the Chicago River from the Columbus Drive Bridge and raced to the finish line, halfway to the Michigan Avenue bridge.

Participants could adopt a duck for a chance to win the race and nearly $500,000 was raised. All the proceeds from the derby will benefit athletes of Special Olympics Illinois, allowing more than 23,100 athletes and 13,000 young athletes to participate in year-round sports training and competitions.

Special Olympics aims to shape a world where people with intellectual disabilities can thrive in their community through sports, leadership, and personal development. They hope to help enhance physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence, and community support.

Winning derby ducks had the chance to win this year’s top prizes including:

  • 2024 Chevy Trax
  • Four lifetime passes to Six Flags Great America
  • 7-night cruise for two at Royal Caribbean Cruise
  • Save The Duck shopping spree
  • $2,000 cash prize
