Embrace the madness of March as the Big Ten tournament returns to Chicago

Windy City hoops fans have something to get excited about as the Big Ten Tournament returns to Chicago for a week-long basketball extravaganza. 

The United Center will play host to the 29th annual edition of the tournament, which is scheduled to tip off on Tuesday, March 10, and run until Sunday, March 15.

This year marks a change in format for the competition, as it adjusts to recent conference realignment, with this year being the first time the tournament will expand from five days to six in order to accommodate all 18 Big Ten teams.

According to the official website, the shift will see the additional day showcase “play-in” face-offs between the bottom four regular-season teams, while the top four teams will enjoy a prestigious triple bye. As always, the winner of the tournament will be awarded a coveted automatic bid to the NCAA March Madness tournament.

The competition is sure to be fierce as the Big Ten was once again the premier basketball conference in college basketball this year, with a number of contenders coming to the forefront over the course of the season.

The Michigan Wolverines will enter the competition as favorites coming off a fantastic regular season and looking to defend their Big Ten Tournament championship from last year.

However, to lift the trophy once again, they will have to go through a difficult bracket that contains other nationally ranked challengers, including Illinois, Michigan St., Nebraska and Purdue, as stated on the Big Ten website.

The Championship game will be played at 2:30 p.m. CST on Sunday, with the official national reveal of the March Madness bracket scheduled for later that evening.

The Big Ten Tournament was last hosted in Chicago in 2023, with the games also taking place at the United Center.

Tickets are still available for purchase and are sold in packages called “sessions.” Each session will vary, with earlier tournament sessions including up to four games, while the championship session will only include the title bout.

An all sessions package is also available for purchase with pricing ranging from $400-$500 currently.
