By day, Shedd Aquarium invites guests to get face-to-face with sea otters, sturgeon, snakes and more. But after hours? The aquarium’s halls transform into dance floors filled with music, cocktails and the occasional jellyfish.

 

This summer, Shedd is turning up the volume with a full lineup of summer events designed to bring Chicagoans and visitors closer to aquatic life — and each other. From Latin dance nights and drag shows to kayaking tours and stingray feedings, here’s what’s on deck:

 

Ritmo del Mar

¡Muévelo! This 21+ night blends music, cuisine, culture and sea creatures with a lively Latin beat. Dance to salsa, cumbia, merengue and Latin jazz, or pick up new moves during a bachata dance lesson. The party includes access to aquarium exhibits, bilingual animal chats, lotería, and a chef-curated food menu available for purchase.

Dates: Saturday, June 21; Saturday, July 12; Saturday, Aug. 16 | 7–11 p.m.

Jazzin’ at the Shedd

Now in its 30th year, this mid-week favorite brings live jazz to Shedd’s galleries every Wednesday night. Guests of all ages can explore new exhibits like Wonder of Water and Amazon Rising while enjoying bites, drinks and performances from local and national artists.

Dates: Wednesdays, May 28 – Aug. 27 | 5–10 p.m.

Special Nights: May 28 is free for members; June 18 is HBCU/Divine 9 Night (sold out)

Pride Night

Celebrate Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community at this high-energy event hosted in partnership with A Queer Pride. Expect DJs, drag performers, marine life and a joyful crowd ready to party under the sea.

Date: Saturday, June 14 | 6–10:30 p.m.

House Party

A celebration of Chicago’s house music legacy, this 21+ night brings beats and marine biodiversity together. Guests can explore colorful corals and pulsing jellyfish while DJs spin house tracks across the galleries.

Date: Saturday, July 19 | 7–11 p.m.

Kayak for Conservation

Trade dance floors for paddles with this immersive eco-tour of the Chicago River. Open to various age groups, the program explores urban biodiversity and conservation efforts while offering the chance to spot wildlife like herons, turtles and monarchs.

Dates: Fridays and Saturdays, June–September

Tickets: Members $52; Non-members $65; Group rates available

 

Stingray Touch

Back for the season, Stingray Touch lets guests feel the unique texture of cownose rays and even feed them a seafood snack (if you're feeling brave). With bilingual signage and open access, it’s a hit for all ages.

Opens: Wednesday, May 7

Cost: Exhibit included with general admission; feeds $3 for members, $5 for non-members
