The Shedd Aquarium is hosting its inaugural Haunted House Party on Friday, Oct. 31, merging Chicago’s rich house music culture with festive Halloween fun. Unlike typical haunted events, this party centers on dance and celebration rather than scares, inviting guests aged 21 and over to enjoy music, costumes, and aquarium exhibits from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Electrifying DJ lineup and performances

The event features two renowned Chicago house DJs: Dee Jay Alicia and DJ Lori Branch. Dee Jay Alicia is celebrated for her deep, soulful house sets that honor Chicago’s legacy as the birthplace of house music. Her thoughtful mixing and community activism make her a standout artist, with releases on platforms like Bandcamp and Beatport. DJ Lori Branch, a pioneer in the local house scene, hosts the Vintage House radio show and co-curates the Chicago Home of House Exhibit. Both will perform from 6-9:45 p.m. on separate stages.

Immersive experiences and event details

Guests receive admission to all aquarium exhibits, including touch experiences, alongside live entertainment. Special features include the Jinxed Virtual Reality (VR) experience, a thrilling ghost train adventure through a spooky funfair. The event’s indoor location is due to ongoing renovations, with the North Terrace closed for new exhibit construction.

Costumes are encouraged, but must adhere to Shedd’s visitor guidelines, prohibiting full-face masks and prop weapons. The food menu offers themed items such as spicy buffalo chicken sliders and pumpkin tres leches cake, complemented by specialty cocktails like the Phantom Punch and Witching Hour.

Educational talks are scheduled throughout the evening at various exhibits, and the Wild Reef and other key areas will close earlier to accommodate animal care and nighttime conditions. The last entry is at 9 p.m., an hour before the event ends.

This unique Halloween celebration blends Chicago’s iconic house music with aquatic wonder, making it a memorable night for fans of music, costumes, and marine life alike.
