On Sunday, May 28, Chicago’s iconic Maxwell Street Market returns for the 2023 season and runs every Sunday through October 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Today, the market offers handmade items, resale, clothing and more. Live music and street food vendors give the outdoor shopping experience a fun, celebratory feel.

Maxwell Street Market was started by Jewish immigrants from eastern Europe in the late 1800s, and was officially recognized by the City of Chicago in 1912. It was known as a place where shoppers could find anything. The market was moved to Desplaines street to accommodate an expansion of nearby University of Illinois Chicago.

Entrance is free, and the market can be accessed at the intersection of Desplaines and Harrison Streets or Desplaines and Taylor Streets.
