As the 41st Chicago Latino Film Festival opens its doors from April 3-14, audiences are invited to step into a world of groundbreaking stories and mesmerizing visuals. With a rich collection of premieres, this year’s festival reflects the dynamic pulse of Latinx culture, offering a window into the past, present, and future.
The Chicago Latino Film Festival, organized by the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago, is the longest-running Latino film festival in the United States. Since 1985, it has served as a vital cultural bridge, showcasing the diverse voices of Latin American cinema and fostering cultural understanding through the universal language of film.
World Premieres
Among the world premieres is "The Business Women's Club" ("O Clube das Mulheres de Negócios") from Brazil, directed by Anna Muylaert. This dark social satire explores themes of patriarchy, sexism, and classism within a São Paulo high society country club.
Colombia's "Seeds" ("Semillas"), directed by Eliana Niño, tells the story of Shaira, a young girl from the eastern plains who embarks on a journey to find a special seed to bring rain and recover her sold horse.
From the Dominican Republic, "I Am My Grandma's Granddaughter" ("Nieta de mi abuela"), directed by Tatiana Fernández Geara, is a documentary exploring the life of the filmmaker's grandmother, Teresa, who challenged societal norms through her multiple divorces and ownership of a movie theater.
North American Premieres
The festival's opening night will feature the North American premiere of "Dear Gentlemen" at the Davis Theatre on April 3. Additionally, the centerpiece presentation on April 9 at the Instituto Cervantes will showcase "The Black Land," directed by Alberto Morais and starring Sergi López.
Regular screenings will take place at the Landmark Century Centre Cinema, located at 2828 N. Clark St. The festival will also host special events, including the opening and closing nights at the Davis Theatre, 4614 N. Lincoln Ave., and the centerpiece presentation at the Instituto Cervantes, 31 W. Ohio St.
