Red Bull Spin Off race rolls into Chicago with custom bike building & floating race track

Red Bull Spin Off is set to bring a one-day bike challenge to Chicago, where two-person teams will build custom bicycles and try to cross a floating race track without falling in. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 12th Street Beach in Chicago, according to Red Bull.

The event is free and lists the location as 12th Street Beach, 1200 S. Linn White Drive, near Solidarity Drive, with bus route 146 serving the area.

Rules put balance to the test

The event is billed as a race, and Red Bull says the fastest team across the finish line will be favored. According to Red Bull’s Rules page, each bike must have fully functioning brakes and steering.

Red Bull also says the bikes cannot be more than 6 feet wide, 12 feet long, 7 feet tall, or weigh more than 176 pounds, not counting the driver. The machines must be powered only by gravity, with no external energy sources allowed.

The Chicago stop adds a local stage to a format tied to Red Bull’s playful, engineering-heavy cycling events. The company describes the contest as one that calls for “Balance, brains, and bravery required.”
