The Chicago Ducky Derby is splashing into the Chicago River once again this August, promising a fun-filled day of events in support of Special Olympics Illinois.
The Ducky Derby is a signature fundraising event wherein tens of thousands of rubber ducks are dropped into the Chicago River and floated downstream to the finish line. Participants can “adopt a duck” to compete in the race, with the winning duck owners taking home various first--, second-, and third-place prizes.
This year’s event takes place on August 7, kicking off with the Ducky Day Festival beginning at 10:00 a.m. The festival will feature family-friendly activities, games, live entertainment, food trucks, and more.
The official duck drop takes place at 1:00 p.m. and the race lasts half an hour. Winners will be announced once the first duck crosses the finish line.
Interested parties can choose from various duck adoption packages, from a single duck to a 240-duck collection. Proceeds from the duck adoptions support Special Olympics Illinois programming and benefit its 24,000 athletes.
