An excessive heat advisory has been issued for Chicago by the National Weather Service ahead of sweltering temperatures. The heat advisory will go into effect at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 23, and last until late Thursday.

According to the heat advisory, temperatures across Chicago will remain above 90 degrees until late Wednesday evening. Heat indexes predict temperatures as high as 110 degrees when factoring in humidity.

“The magnitude of anticipated heat, combined with oppressive warmth at night will lead to hazardous conditions”, read the statement. Conditions will be especially hazardous for elderly populations and those with pre-existing health problems.

Both at-risk populations and the general public are advised to limit time outdoors, drink plenty of fluids, and reschedule strenuous outdoor activities. Individuals should also know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke and exhaustion.

Chicago residents can call 311 to request wellness checks for elderly family members and friends or for information on locating local cooling centers.
