Harvard University has made history with the appointment of Claudine Gay as its 30th president, making her the first Black person and the second woman to lead the prestigious Ivy League institution. A renowned democracy scholar and dean, Gay will assume her new role on July 1, 2024, replacing outgoing president Lawrence Bacow, according to the Associated Press (AP).
Her appointment comes as institutions around the US, including those in Chicago, highlight the importance of promoting diversity and inclusion in leadership positions. ‘
“I am absolutely humbled by the confidence that the governing board has placed in me,” Gay said during a speech at her introduction as the new President. “I am also incredibly humbled by the prospect of succeeding President Bacow and leading this incredible institution.”
The appointment sends an inspiring message to students, aspiring academics, and professionals in Chicago and across the country, as more institutions break barriers and welcome a new generation of diverse leaders.
According to the AP, Gay is known as a leading voice in addressing American political participation, having researched the effects of social and economic factors on American voting patterns. Gray also founded Harvard’s Inequality in America initiative, a program that studies the impact of poverty and economic inequality in the US.
Gay’s appointment marks a turning point for the Ivy League, as women will now outnumber men as leaders at top Ivy League schools, according to the AP. Gray’s leadership will broadly impact the local, state, and federal levels.
In her speech, Gay emphasized that Harvard must actively give back to the world. “The idea of the ‘ivory tower’ — that is the past, not the future of academia. We don’t exist outside of society, but as part of it,” she said. “That means that Harvard has a duty to lean in, engage and to be of service to the world.”
