The definition of Curling: a game played on ice involving round, flat stones being pushed toward target circles with brooms between two teams. Curling is mostly played in Canada and Scotland, where the sport is believed to have originated. The trajectory of the stones typically curves or “curls” at the end of its path over textured, bumpy ice.
There are unique opportunities to enjoy the sport of Curling right here in Chicago. For example, The Kennedy Rooftop offers Curling atop the Hyatt Place at 1551 W. North Ave., in Wicker Park. How about pairing your Curling experience with a Boozy Igloo? Reservations are required for both Curling and Boozy Igloo rentals at kennedyrooftop.com.
You may not think of Navy Pier as a place to partake in Curling, but think again. Harry Caray’s Restaurant offers the sport on their lakefront patio. This sheet of ice is made with Polyglide synthetic ice boasting a real ice feel. It’s no problem if you’ve never Curled because they provide instructions, and a Warming Hut equipped with an electric fireplace and blankets. Groups of up to 6 people can make reservations at harrycarays.com.
Curling and shopping can be united at the Shops of Northbridge, located Upstairs at the Gwen. The venue can be accessed via the Shops of Northbridge, 520 N. Michigan Ave., or through The Gwen Hotel itself at 721 N. Rush St. It’s billed as a Retro Wonderland with disco-inspired drinks and vintage pop-up shops.
