The Western Golf Association is currently hosting a student art contest to help create the official mural for the 2023 BMW Championship, a PGA tournament that will be held just outside of Chicago at Olympia Fields Country Club from August 15-20. The mural will reside in a tunnel that connects the Olympia Fields Metra Station to the country club, where spectators and players will pass throughout the weekend.
“This is an incredible opportunity for the talented young people of our community to show off their artistic ability while helping us celebrate the BMW Championship and the game of golf,” said Vince Pellegrino, WGA Senior Vice President of Tournaments. “This new mural will educate fans on their way to the BMW Championship and generate excitement for the event’s return to the Chicagoland area.”
Students between kindergarten and high school are eligible to submit their best artwork — which can be a drawing, painting, or digital art — using the theme of “Golf in Chicago.” Three winners will be selected and win a BMW Championship prize package of tickets, merchandise, and a pin flag signed by Patrick Cantlay, who won last year’s tournament.
In addition to the theme, judges for the art contest have given students the guidance to create artwork that illustrates feelings of joy, optimism, triumph, and determination. Furthermore, student artists are encouraged to let iconic moments from the championship’s history in Chicago inspire them.
The themes of youth and education can also inspire submissions — guidance related to the fact that all proceeds from the BMW Championship go to the Evans Scholars Foundation. The program — which has raised $44.5 million since 2007 — provides full tuition and housing scholarships to youth caddies nationwide and has helped over 3,300 students attend college.
Art submissions and applications are due on Friday, June 9 by 11:59 p.m. CST.
