A brrrrrfect storm: Arctic blast brings more snow, sub-zero temps to the Windy City

Following on the heels of an unusually snowy start to the winter season, Chicagoans can brace for another harsh weekend ahead with sub-zero temperatures and more snow reported for the Windy City. 

The city faced its largest single-day snowfall in November this year to kick off what some meteorologists are predicting could be a record-breaking cold winter.

Beginning Saturday, a storm front is expected to drift in, bringing with it temperatures that could reach into the negatives, with daily highs unlikely to reach double digits for the first time this season. Sunday's outlook looks even bleaker with wind chill keeping most of the day at subzero temperatures that could dip to as low as -20 degrees by nightfall. Fox News reports this would necessitate a weather advisory warning from the weather service.

As for snowfall, according to the Weather Channel, forecasts will vary depending on where you are in the Chicago area. For southern counties and large parts of downtown, Saturday is expected to bring moderate flurries that could leave as much as 2-3 inches on the ground, adding to the roughly 17 inches the city has already received up to this point. North downtown neighborhoods and the northern suburbs may be safer from the downfall depending on the movement of the storm front over the next 48 hours.

Thankfully, the coming week should bring some relief to the city. Monday highs are forecasted into the 20s, and in true Chicago unpredictability, temperatures later in the week could peak in the 40s and maybe even 50s. 

The Chicago Bears host the Cleveland Browns on Sunday in what could be one of the coldest games ever played at Soldier Field. So as Chicagoans hunker down and try to survive the second of what could be many arctic blasts this winter, they can at least appreciate they're not outside on a football field getting hit by 240-lb professional athletes.
