Arctic blast brings early snow, record cold across the Midwest and East

The 2025 fall season is skipping rapidly ahead as an intense Arctic cold front sweeps across the Midwest, Great Lakes, Appalachian Mountains, and parts of the eastern U.S., bringing record-breaking cold temperatures and early-season snow, reports CNN. More than two dozen states are experiencing a short but sharp deep freeze, signaling the arrival of winter weather and record-low temperatures far earlier than usual.

On Monday morning, tens of millions of residents east of the Rockies will face the coldest temperatures since spring. Several locations are forecast to threaten record lows—freezing conditions are possible as far south as Texas and as far east as the Appalachian region, CNN says. According to the report, Atlanta, Georgia, faces a dramatic drop; Sunday’s highs near 70 degrees will plunge to the mid-40s on Monday, with lows dipping into the upper 20s by Tuesday morning, potentially the coldest since February. Similarly, cities like Washington, D.C., and New York City are likely to wake to temperatures close to freezing with wind chills in the low to mid-20s by Tuesday.

Heavy lake-effect snow and travel hazards

According to The Weather Channel, the cold air passing over the Great Lakes is generating significant lake-effect snow bands, leading to rapid snow accumulations in typical snow belt hotspots such as northern Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York. Some locations have already recorded double-digit snowfall counts; for instance, Momence, Illinois, saw up to 12 inches of snow in just six hours. Nearby, Chicago’s O'Hare Airport recorded 1.7 inches through early Monday morning.

This early snow is causing widespread travel disruptions. Indiana has reported numerous vehicle accidents amid slushy and slick roads, The Weather Channel reports. The Appalachians are also experiencing accumulating snow, with up to 3 inches already in higher elevations and more snow expected through Tuesday in parts of West Virginia and the northern New England mountains. Officials advise drivers to plan for slippery roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, where wet surfaces may freeze as temperatures drop sharply at night.

Despite the severity of the cold and snow, this winter blast is expected to be brief. Temperatures in the central U.S. will rebound near or above normal as early as Tuesday, with the eastern states following suit by Wednesday, according to forecasters at CNN.

This Arctic air mass marks the first significant winter weather event of the year for many parts of the Midwest and Northeast, with some snowfalls arriving slightly later than the usual historical averages but arriving nonetheless to aggressively start the season.
