The Chicago Bears called an Indiana bill the "most meaningful step forward" in new stadium plans, according to NBC Chicago. An Indiana House committee passed it unanimously Thursday, the measure creating a finance authority for a dome near Wolf Lake in Hammond, Indiana.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the team focused on a site at Lost Marsh Golf Course, located by 129th Street and Calumet Avenue, about 18 miles from Soldier Field. The spot sits by an oil refinery and homes, and was reportedly built on an old landfill.

Indiana leaders cheer partnership

Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston said, “I think we found a great partner in the Chicago Bears.” He called Thursday historic. Chicago Sun-Times reported his comments.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott grew emotional. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, he said, “Hammond’s ready to partner with the state of Indiana. Hammond’s ready to partner with the Chicago Bears — basically, Hammond will do whatever it takes to help make this project a success.”

In a statement, the Bears said the bill's passage “would mark the most meaningful step forward in our stadium planning efforts to date,” NBC Chicago reported. It went on to say, “We are committed to finishing the remaining site-specific necessary due diligence to support our vision to build a world-class stadium near the Wolf Lake area in Hammond, Indiana.” A spokesman reportedly added, “Hammond is the site we are focused on. Work to be done.”

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Gov. Mike Braun praised the pro-growth move. He noted a promising site and framework for a deal. The bill needs full House approval by Feb. 27, NBC Chicago added.

Illinois deal stalls amid surprise

The Bears' statement surprised Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. His team met with Bears reps for three hours Wednesday, NBC Chicago noted. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Pritzker reportedly said, “It’s very disappointing to hear that they would put that statement out, but not say anything about the advancement that’s been made in the state of Illinois.”

Illinois paused a hearing at the Bears' request. Lawmakers discuss an Arlington Heights stadium with tax fixes and infrastructure aid. Their session runs to May, as reported by NBC Chicago.

The Bears have eyed Chicago, Arlington Heights and now Hammond over three years.
