The Chicago Blackhawks have selected 17-year-old Connor Bedard as the No.1 pick in the NHL draft. Bedard made history by being the Blackhawk’s second No.1 pick, the first instance being the 2007 draft of Patrick Kane.
With Kane recently traded to the New York Rangers and Towes absent from the team next season, the Blackhawks aim to reshape the team with Bedard as the centerpiece. The Hawks will focus on developing and maximizing Bedard’s skills, calling the teen a “generational prospect”.
Having played in the Canadian Junior Hockey League for the Regina Pats, Bedard became the first player to sweep the Canadian Hockey League’s Player of the Year, Top Prospect and Top Scorer Awards. He also led Canada to gold in the 2023 World Junior Championship, breaking five records and surpassing Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr, and Eric Lindros in several categories.
This new draft pick could transform the team in the upcoming seasons. As a highly skilled forward, Bedard has drawn comparisons to Connor McDavid and Sidney Crosby, making him a strong player to lead the Hawks to victory after an eight-year championship drought.
Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson kept the NHL tradition alive and didn’t name his No.1 pick prior to this year’s draft. However, fans had already speculated on who it would be.
“I’m not focused on outside expectations. I’m going to be focused on my teammates, coaches, family,” Bedard said in a statement. “I’m trying to win hockey games and trying to be the best player I can be.”
The Chicago Blackhawks and their fanbase are excited to welcome this new rookie and are hopeful to witness the success he will bring to Chicago.
