The Brookfield Zoo is welcoming nine recently hatched American flamingos for the first time since 1997. The flamingos range from 2 to 5 months old and can be visited at the Zoo’s Swamp habitat.
Weather permitting, the flamingoes will make daily appearances by the Roosevelt Fountain around noon so visitors can experience their beauty up close. The nine chicks arrived from one of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoos. With this exciting welcome comes a chance for Chicagoans to help name the new additions.
Those interested in helping name one of the flamingos can go to the zoo’s website and vote on female names, Fiona, Peggy, Sunrise and Daisy, and male names, Otis, Ringo, Dash and Fabio. Voting will close on Tuesday, October 24, at noon and names will be announced on Wednesday, October 25.
“Brookfield Zoo is thrilled to welcome back American flamingos to the Zoo’s family of aquatic birds,” said Cody Hickman, associate director of avian care at the Zoo. “Over the coming years, we hope to breed and hatch many more flamingo chicks at the Zoo to build up a large flock, similar to what you might experience in the wild.”
