Today we celebrate a legend in the world of jazz dance, the late Gus Giordano. On April 25, 1985, then Governor James R. Thompson declared this day to be Gus Giordano Day. As founder of the Giordano Dance Chicago company, he changed the cultural landscape of American jazz dance.
An award-winning teacher, dancer and choreographer, Giordano performed on Broadway and on television. He founded the Gus Giordano Dance School in 1953 and, throughout his life, spread his iconic technique and style to thousands of dance enthusiasts in North America, Europe, Asia and South America.
He was also the creator of the First American Jazz Dance World Congress in 1990 and literally wrote the book on jazz dance, the Anthololgy of American Jazz Dance.
His company, Giordano Dance Chicago, thrives under the watchful eye of his daughter Nan Giordano, a trailblazer in her own right who is also an accomplished dancer, teacher and choreographer. (www.giordanodance.org)
