The Mayor's Office of Equity and Racial Justice and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot have created a new "Together We Heal" campaign designed to assist racial healing throughout the city, Chicago officials announced Dec. 7.
According to a city news release, the initiative's goals include empowering Chicagoans to foster "connection, restoration and learning at this time of racial reckoning for both the city and the nation."
"Through the ‘Together We Heal’ initiative, we will turn this acknowledgement into action—constructing discursive spaces for our residents to listen to one another, heal and work together to create a Chicago free from the scourges of racial injustice," Lightfoot said in the news release. "By building bridges to one another through this racial healing work, we will not only be more united as a city but develop the empathy we need in order to holistically recover from the challenges of this unprecedented year."
The community challenge portion of the initiative, which lasts until the end of January, asks Chicagoans to organize a virtual healing event with family, friends, colleagues neighbors and other members of their social networks; share experiences online through a form linked to a "Healing Map" and champion efforts through their community and on social media.
