Complete Streets project brings added protections to Milwaukee Avenue

The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is bringing much-needed improvements to a stretch of Milwaukee Avenue as part of the Complete Streets initiative. According to a statement from the city, construction began Monday to make the high-traffic street safer and more accessible for all commuters.

Complete Streets is a city-wide campaign designed to benefit everyone using the road, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transportation passengers. 

As part of the program, the stretch of Milwaukee Avenue between North and Campbell Avenues will be retrofitted with protected bike lanes, refurbished bus stops, pedestrian refuge islands, and connections to the nearby Bloomingdale Trail.

During the construction phase, the bike lane situated between North and Campbell Avenues will be closed. Signage will be provided to manage bicycle traffic, and alternative routes for cyclists will be available via the bike lanes on Damen Avenue and Armitage Avenue. 

Motorists are urged to be attentive when entering and traversing work zones, adhering to posted speed limits and being mindful of workers, equipment, pedestrians, cyclists, and fellow motorists.
