Families of Chicago Public Schools students still learning remotely will be able to opt in to in-person classes later this year, and the school district is seeking input from students and parents to help guide the reopening plan.
Parents will receive the opt-in forms directly, and every CPS student, from kindergarteners to high school seniors, will be granted access to the opt-in feature for two weeks. Students in pre-K, elementary and cluster programs have the option to return Monday, April 19, the beginning of the fourth quarter.
While a return date has not yet been established for high school students, the district hopes to resume in-person classes at the high school level as soon as mid-April, and CPS is actively working with the Chicago Teachers Union to create a plan for these students and staff.
A virtual town hall for parents of high school students is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. Wednesday March 10, and another online meeting for elementary school parents will take place 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16.
The district also plans to engage students during the next few weeks so that their feedback can be incorporated into the planning process.
