Chicago saw warmer temperatures this past winter thanks to the El Niño weather phenomenon, but patterns are changing and the Windy City could soon see very different conditions. According to a report from NBC Chicago, a La Niña pattern is expected to take hold in 2024, bringing warmer summer temperatures and a potentially cold and snowy winter.
El Niño and La Niña are contrasting climate patterns that can drastically affect weather in different regions of the U.S. During El Niño periods, warm air gathers in the tropical Pacific and affects weather patterns around the globe. During El Niño, the Northern U.S. typically experiences warmer, drier winters, and cooler summers.
La Niña does the opposite, ushering in cold, wetter winters and hot, drier summers for the Northern U.S. According to the National Weather Service, La Niña is likely to develop between June and August bringing dry and hot conditions to Chicago.

With a major weather shift on the way, now is the time for Chicago residents to prepare their homes with energy-efficient upgrades like window replacement. As stated in a report by Energy.gov, making changes like this can ensure homeowners save between 5% and 30% of energy dollars each year, particularly by preventing air leaks from poor insulation.
Local businesses KobyCo Windows and Evergreen Windows provide Illinois residents with several options for making energy-efficient upgrades, and according to General Manager Kevin O’Keefe — who oversees both companies — spring slots are already filling up fast.
“Drafty windows can account for a significant portion of your heating and cooling costs. According to the Department of Energy, upgrading to new windows can lead to savings of up to 30% on your energy bills,” says O’Keefe.
Here are a few ways homeowners can optimize their homes to be energy efficient ahead of Chicago’s summer heat waves and an expectantly wet winter.
Energy-efficient windows and doors
Replacing windows and doors not only provides an upgrade of style but also an opportunity to reduce hot air infiltration. According to Energy.gov, about 20% of air infiltration occurs through cracks and holes in both windows and doors. Cost-effective options from businesses like KobyCo Windows and Evergreen Windows allow homeowners to choose from a selection of windows and doors that combine style with functionality. Window options from both companies are energy efficient, easy to maintain, and beautifully designed.

Upgraded insulation
Poorly insulated windows can prove detrimental when preparing the home for the summer, allowing warm air to seep in from the outside and wasting valuable energy dollars. New windows from KobyCo and Evergreen Windows help customers conserve cool air and money simultaneously.
Reinforced siding
Upgrading a home’s siding can give it a fresh look while protecting the home from snow, hail, rain, and oppressive heat. Evergreen Windows also provides options for energy-efficient siding to keep the home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
New gutters
Installing new gutters is another way to keep harsh weather at bay. Evergreen Windows offers gutters that give the home a finished look while improving energy efficiency and protecting it from the elements. Their gutters are made to withstand harsh weather and keep pests out, with little maintenance required. Evergreen also offers soffit and fascia options, which increase ventilation during the hot summer months and prevent water damage during spring showers.
Retractable awnings
Chicagoans can beat the heat this summer and save energy dollars by installing a retractable awning. KobyCo Windows offers retractable awnings that give the home added stylistic flair while providing essential shade all summer long. Perfect for decks, patios, and windows, awnings provide vital protection from the sun and reduce the home's internal temperature.
KobyCo and Evergreen Windows are both offering special deals this spring on all home improvement needs. Both local businesses provide affordable payment options, speedy approvals, and fast and friendly service. Book a free consultation on their websites.
