"Foster Boy," an award-winning film based on a Chicago attorney's experiences litigating cases involving the foster care system, will premiere on BET+ Feb. 13 in conjunction with Black History Month.

Executive producer Shaquille O'Neal worked with co-producers Jay Paul Deratany, Anne Marie MacKay, Andrew Sugerman and Peter Samuelson to tell the story of Jamal, a teen who takes an abusive foster care agency to court with the help of a lawyer named Michael Trainer. The film, which stars  Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr., Matthew Modine, Julie Benz and Shane Paul McGhie, has earned more than a dozen awards at film festivals around the country.

"This film is meant to touch people, give them hope, shake them to their core, and inspire them to get up and fight for foster kids, who have no voice," Deratany said in a news release in August 2020. "We know this story and the way it has been brought to life on screen will have a profound positive impact on children’s rights and foster care for decades to come."

"Foster Boy" was initially released in theaters in September 2020, as well as on platforms such as Amazon Prime.
