A cargo plane carrying 24,000 pounds of supplies left Chicago for Hawaii last Friday, to aid in recovery from the devastating Maui Wildfires.
The United Airlines flight departed from O’Hare International Airport containing food, baby formula, and hygiene products, the Sun-Times reported.
The King Cathedral Church in Maui reportedly arranged the delivery. The plane stopped in Denver before arriving in Hawaii, and subsequently returned to the U.S. carrying Maui residents fleeing the destruction.
The Maui Wildfires began on August 8, impacting Maui’s western peninsula, home to the historic city of Lahaina. Officials have reported more than 100 casualties as a result of the disaster.
Chicagoans can support recovery efforts by donating to non-profitHawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. According to the foundation, the Maui Strong Fund is focused on “providing financial resources that can be deployed quickly”. $56,616,592 has been raised so far, as of August 21.
