Golden Tempo charged to victory in the 152nd Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. The 3-year-old bay colt, a 24-1 long shot, edged Renegade by a neck in the 1 1/8-mile race, according to Fox News. Trainer Cherie DeVaux became the first woman to win the Kentucky Derby.

Jockey Jose L. Ortiz guided Golden Tempo to his first Derby win on his 11th try. "I don't even have words right now," an emotional DeVaux said on the NBC broadcast after the upset, as reported byFox News. Ortiz beat his brother Irad, who rode Renegade.

DeVaux's win marked her first Triple Crown race victory and just the second for a female trainer ever, Fox News reported. The field started with 19 horses after The Puma scratched due to a skin infection. According to Yahoo Sports, other scratches included Silent Tactic, Fulleffort, Right to Party, and Great White, reducing it to 18.

Track conditions were fast with good visibility and low precipitation. Temps hit 54 degrees, cooler than the usual 74-degree high in Louisville. Renegade, from the No. 1 post, led late but faded against Golden Tempo's surge, Fox News confirmed.

The $5 million purse is split among the top finishers. Yahoo Sports noted that Golden Tempo's team earned $3.1 million, with 80% to owners, 10% to DeVaux, and 10% to Ortiz. Renegade got $1 million, Ocelli $500,000, Chief Wallabee $250,000, and Danon Bourbon $150,000.
