On Friday, Gov. Pritzker announced a funding initiative to demolish and rebuild historic Stateville Prison as part of his budget proposal for 2025.

According to a statement, the project will overhaul the nearly 100-year-old prison, addressing critical infrastructure needs and reducing annual maintenance fees.

The funding initiative will reportedly begin with Stateville’s redevelopment and eventually extend to other run-down prison facilities in Illinois. The prison will be closed temporarily during the redevelopment, with an exact timeline for the project yet to be determined.

"The capital funds dedicated to Stateville and Logan further demonstrate our commitment to continuing to rebuild and strengthen our state's infrastructure," said Gov. Pritzker.

"These investments will allow staff to work in modern and safe facilities, ensure those who are incarcerated can safely serve out their sentences, and save taxpayers hundreds of millions in deferred maintenance costs from years of neglect."
