IKEA plans to close its large IKEA Bolingbrook store and move the operation to a smaller location in Naperville, marking a major change for the Swedish furniture retailer’s presence in Chicago’s western suburbs. The Bolingbrook store will remain open until the new site is ready in late 2027, as reported by NBC Chicago.

Why IKEA is leaving Bolingbrook
The retailer said the move is part of an effort to “meet customers where they are,” NBC Chicago reported. According to the Chicago Business Journal, the new Naperville IKEA will be located at the Block 59 shopping center, between Hollywood Palms movie theaters and The Edge fitness club, about eight to 11 miles from the current Bolingbrook store, depending on the route.
“This relocation reflects how our customers are increasingly living, working and shopping across the broader Bolingbrook-Naperville corridor,” IKEA confirmed in a statement, per NBC Chicago. The company said the move will place the store closer to growing population centers and a popular shopping district while keeping it accessible to current customers.
The Bolingbrook location opened in 2005 at 750 E. Boughton Road. The two-story store covers roughly 310,000 to 317,000 square feet, while the new space will be significantly smaller.

What the new Naperville store will offer
According to the Chicago Business Journal, IKEA will occupy a 97,079-square-foot space. The store will carry IKEA’s full range of products and include a Swedish Food Market and Swedish Deli, the report confirmed.
The smaller-format store is expected to open in late 2027. Shoppers who want to visit a larger IKEA can continue using the company’s approximately 400,000-square-foot store near Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, according to the retailer.
Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli said the store’s sales tax revenue will support city services and “ease the burden on property taxpayers,” as reported by the Chicago Business Journal.
IKEA is also planning another small-format store at Gurnee Mills. The location had been scheduled to open in fall 2026, though NBC Chicago reported that IKEA had not provided an updated timeline.
